The data required for the report was collected from 39 companies which covers 26 performance metrics. This data was collected and processed in accordance with the standard procedures in Responsible care.
Performance Metrics
Occupational health and safety
In 2022 Members achieved a significant improvement of 17% reduction in Total Recordable Incidents (TRIs) in 2022 compared to the nine-year average, and a 3% improvement from 2021 despite a 3% increase in man-hours.
Process safety
A significant Improvement of 31% decrease in Tier 1 process safety incidents in 2022 was observed as compared to 2021, and 40% reduction compared to the nine-year average.
GPCA introduced a new initative called Gulf process safety network which seeks to establish a platform for exchange of knowledge among regional process safety experts.
Emission and discharge
The key achievements were as follows
Hazardous waste generation reduced by 42% in 2022 compared to 2021, and 61% compared to the nine-year average.
Wastewater discharge reduced by 15% in 2022 compared to 2021, and 86% compared to 2013. This indicates a remarkable 77% decrease in wastewater discharge to the environment, when considering the cumulative effect over the nine-year period from 2013 to 2022.
COD (ton/year) discharges by member companies has decreased in 2022 by 9% when compared to 2021.
NOx and SOx emissions reduced by 50% and 67% respectively compared to the nine-year average.
CO₂ intensity decreased by 12% from 2021 to 2022, and 24% compared to the nine-year average.
Resource utilization
The average specific energy and the average tons of fuel oil equivalent reported in 2022 reflected a 6% decrease in both. Despite the 37% increase in production between 2022 and 2021, the decreasing specific energy indicates manufacturer’s commitment to improve energy efficiency and reduce their environmental impact.
Energy efficiency
Specific energy consumption saw a 6% decrease in 2022, despite a 37% increase in production.
Process water consumption
The Water consumption decreased by 6% in 2022 compared to 2021, even with a 37% increase in production volume.
Distribution
There was a significant reduction in distribution incidents in 2022 attributed to comprehensive EHS&S programs and collaboration with Logistics Service Providers (LSPs) through the Gulf-SQAS system for standardized assessments.
