The MoU will explore the import, storage, throughput, distribution and potential offtake of ammonia produced by Fertiglobe through MB Energy’s proposed Hamburg import terminal
Covestro, Fertiglobe and MB Energy have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore collaboration across the ammonia value chain in Germany and Europe.
Under the MoU, Fertiglobe will explore the potential supply of ammonia through an import terminal proposed to be built and operated by MB Energy in Hamburg. As part of the collaboration, Fertiglobe will also explore potential equity investment in the Hamburg terminal.
Covestro will evaluate the potential offtake of ammonia delivered through the terminal for use as feedstock in its production and/or to meet hydrogen supply requirements.
The collaboration will explore a new route for importing ammonia into Germany, as well as opportunities to supply other industrial customers across Europe.
The partners will assess what would be needed to bring ammonia through Hamburg, including terminal capacity, supply volumes, delivery arrangements and transport to customers. This will include looking at the infrastructure and logistics required, such as pipelines, barges and rail.
The work will cover conventional, lower-carbon and renewable ammonia. It will also consider the carbon intensity of each supply option and whether it meets relevant EU regulations and certification requirements, including the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and requirements for low-carbon and renewable hydrogen.
